Bonne nouvelle !

Your family is one of Bollywood’s best-known families. How did you manage to choose your own way ?
Yes it’s true, I grew up with cinema around me. One grandfather was a famous film producer but what most people don’t know is that my other grandfather was a photographer.

Was it difficult no to follow the family road ? And to have everybody know your first name ?
I discovered my passion for photography at a very young age and my family always supported me and my career. I guess there are advantages to having people know your name, n’est ce que pas? ;-)

You take pictures of movie stars, fashion designers, models… How do you choose the people you shoot ?
Sometimes it is a matter of circumstance – I am working on a particular film and it comes with it’s team of professionals and talent. And sometimes they choose me!

You’ve shot most of actors and actresses in Bollywood. Who was your favorite ? What do you like in shooting these actors ?
I would have to say that my favourite star is Salman Khan. We worked together when we were both teenagers and now more than 20 years later it is just as easy to have him in front of my camera. I think he would say that there is a certain comfort for him too. You can see it in his smile!

Is there a special moment of these amazing shootings that you keep in mind ?
They are all special. Each shoot marks a period in my life as well as my subject’s.

Do you try to respect a Bollywood style when you work with Bollywood actors ? Or do you try to change the way most of people imagine them ?
I always respect them for who they are. I do not necessarily photograph them in a typical Bollywood way, if there is such a thing.

What can you tell us about your famous book, Lights, Camera, Masala ? And how you work on it ?
Lights Camera Masala was a project that was very special to me. We worked on it for more than 2 years and it was a joy to see it come alive. It takes its readers on a wonderful, colourful journey through the making of films in Mumbai.

What are your projects ?

I am working on my next book for which I have been shooting around the world, even in Paris!

Is there any french actor or actress you would like to shoot ? :)
Without a doubt, Jean Dujardin! And it’s not just because of his brilliant performance in The Artist… My boyfriend Siddharth introduced me to him in Un Gars, Une Fille many years ago and I have been fascinated with him ever since!

Summer is coming. Let it come, and quickly!

Summer is coming. Let it come, and quickly! Until it really shows up, why not brighten our looks with summer flavors? And to add an exotic touch, opt for Indian jewelry. Agatha is currently offering its Indian Summer collection. It sounds great! The shades are enthusing: turquoise, dusty rose, purple… come in earrings, large pendants, silver necklaces, watches with soft colors… All throughout this collection are very fine cuts and soft shapes. It really speaks to me and I want to wear them right away on a skin lightly tanned by the first rays of sun.
My favorites: fine earrings with small turquoise stones and silver bracelets in several rows.

Welcome to Bollywood

Agatha celebrates Bollywood with an Indian flavored collection. Let’s seize this opportunity to talk about Indian cinema. As you may know Bollywood is Bombay meeting Hollywood. Indian movies have no reason to be jealous of American ones. Many of them can’t be seen abroad, but in India Bollywood movies are immensely successful, and Indian actors and actresses are worshipped by their fans. Raj Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Shahrukh Khan… Don’t these names mean nothing to you? You need an express catch-up session! Let’s go on a tour of the realm of Bollywood musical comedies.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

Performed by legendary Indian actors Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, Simran and Raj, both of Indian descent but born and raised in Britain, fall in love during a trip to Switzerland. But Simran’s traditional father has already arranged her marriage, and he takes her back to India to fulfill a betrothal promise.

Devdas (2002)

One of the rare Bollywood movies to have been successful abroad, Devdas tells the story of Dev, a young man whose family prohibits him from marrying Parvati, the girl he is in love with, performed by Aishwarya Rai (you know her, because she’s worth it, she belongs with the L’Oréal team). As he takes up alcohol and a life of vice to numb the pain, his life spirals further and further out of control. Will love triumph in the end?

Veer Zaara (2004)

Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta, the same legendary Bollywood actors, play it again in ‘Veer Zaara‘, an impossible love story between Veer Pratap Singh, an Indian officer, and Zaara Hayaat Khan, a young Pakistani. Get your tissues out: will love triumph over boundaries?

As far as I’m concerned, when I want to feel like a Bollywood actress in my spare time, I fall for Boli, a breast necklace with sparkles. Okay, it’s not very discreet, but it does its job!

Clips and movies

Staying in Bollywood,

let’s jiggle today on Indian rhythms, with video clips both kitsch and cult. What we’ve got: crazy choreography, so cherished by Bollywood movies, singers, actors and dancers with shining smiles, sublime dancers with bodies to die for. Ready to groove? Music!

Love Mera Hit Hit, an extract from the movie Billu:

Kaliyon Ka Chaman, a clip where you can see the sublime Aishwarya Ray:

Guzarish by AR Rahman featuring Aamir Khan and Asin, two great Bollywood actors, a clip from the movie Ghajini (2008):

Maiya Yashoda an extract from the classic Bollywood movie Hum Saath Saath Hain:

Last but not least, my favorite, from the movie Slumdog Millionnaire: Jai Ho!

Want to try a homemade Bollywood look? Play it safe with two Agatha pieces that I especially love: turquoise Neela loops, and Calal bracelets, which exist in various colors.
